BACKGROUND
International Mother Language Day is an annual event which is held on the 21st of February every year. It aims at promoting awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, multilingualism, and peaceful co-existence of diverse language speakers. It does not only aim to promote the use of mother tongue, but also the recognition of the need for co-existence of different languages and cultures.
The day was first declared an international day by UNESCO on the 17th of November, 1999. International Mother Language Day has since 2000 been observed to promote peace and multilingualism. The day is celebrated in memory of students from the University of Dhaka, Jagannath College and Dhaka Medical College, who demonstrated in 1952 for the official recognition of Bengali as one of the two national languages of East Pakistan and were brutally shot dead by police (then under Pakistan government).
