The College of Languages Education of the University of Education, Winneba is organizing a three-day seminar on the theme “Ellipsis in the languages”

The Speaker

Professor Dr. Katharina Hartmann is a full Professor of formal linguistics with research speciality in syntax at the Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main. She had a Master’s degree in German and Romance Studies in 1991 and a PhD at the University of Cologne in 1998 tilted ‘Right Node Raising and Gapping – Interface-Conditions on Prosodic Deletion”. Prof. Dr. Katharina Hartmann also had the opportunity of a research stay at Brandeis University and MIT in Boston, USA where she studied with professors Noam Chomsky, Ray Jackendoff, Alan Prince, Jane Grimshaw, and Joan Maling from 1991-1992. She has worked in various capacities in the academia. From 1992 to 2001 she served as Research assistant at the University of Frankfurt where she got her PhD in 1998. Prof.  Dr. Katharina Hartmann’s passion for linguistics further led her to pick up another appointment as an associate professor at the Institute for German Language and Linguistics, Humboldt-University in Berlin where she presented her Habilitation in 2009. In 2010, she represented the Chair of Prof. Dr. Manfred Krifka, HU Berlin, in 2011 she represented the chair of Prof. Dr. Claudia Maienborn, University of Tübingen. In 2013 she was appointed full professor at the University of Vienna where she stayed until 2015 when she finally became a full professor and chair holder at the University of Frankfurt, her present association. From from 2007-2010 she was the representative chairperson of the renowned German Society for Linguistic Studies.

Her research interests focuses on formal syntax specifically within the domain of extraposition, coordination, ellipsis and information structure with emphasis on focus systems/questions and answers and negation. Prof Dr Katharina has several scientific works to her credit including about 40 publications in reputable linguistics journals, conference proceedings and books / book chapters. She also serves as a reviewer to several scholarly linguistics journals. She is particularly known for her several scientific works in languages in Northern Nigeria.

At the University of Frankfurt, she teaches syntax courses to both Masters and PhD students. Some areas of her teaching assignments include: the Phenomena of Syntax, Theory of Ellipsis, Questions and Answers in African Languages, among others. She also taught at several international summer schools, e.g. at the EGG or at the DGfS summer school.
