A Raisin in the Sun | A Play by the Rare Gems
The Department of Theatre Arts, UEW presents the Rare Gems (Acting Class 2019) in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun.
Synopsis
Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun is about a black family of five each with individual dreams of improving his or her life and by extension the lives of them all together. This family is entirely dependent on a $10,000 life insurance policy left behind by the late Walter Younger (Sr.). Mama, the wife of the late Mr. Younger (referred to in the play as Big Walter), faces the challenge of where and how to invest that amount of money. Will she invest it in her eldest son Walter, whose dream is to open a liquor store, or Beneatha, whose dream is to go to medical school? Or in Mama’s own and overriding dream of moving the family from the tiny, congested apartment home they live in to a more accommodating one of their own? Through all the hurdles, a decision is made.
