“Our Doors are wide open for Further Collaborations…” – Vice-Chancellor
The Vice-Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni has noted that the doors of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) are wide open for further collaborations with other German institutions.
He recounted that UEW is currently collaborating with German institutions like the Darmstadt University, University of Hamburg and the Koln University hence the need to partner more especially in the area of education and mutual benefit.

This was disclosed in a speech read on his behalf by the Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Kagya-Agyemeng on Tuesday, 11th September, 2018 at South Assembly Hall, South Campus, Winneba during the ‘German Info Day’ programme.
“We appreciate the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for the foresight in organising this programme. It affords UEW and the participating institution the opportunity to network and strengthen their relationship. It also affords our students the chance to explore opportunities available in the study of German and other German institutions.
“The relationship between UEW and DAAD dates back to the establishment of this University. Through the DAAD, UEW established academic linkage with the Europa-Universitat Viadrina Frankfurt through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two institutions in the year 2008.” He said.
According to him, UEW now has a full Department of German Language under the Faculty of Foreign Languages Education and Communication (FFLEC) with five lecturers.
“The number of Learners of German continues to grow from year to year. The DAAD promoted the language by organising annual symposia to draw attention to the importance of learning the German Language. Many other German Language Assistants have excelled over the years in teaching of the German Language in the University of Education, Winneba.” The speech pointed out.
The ‘German Info Day’ programme organised by DAAD in collaboration with the German Unit of FFLEC aimed at offering students and the University community the opportunity to find out more about German institutions in Ghana and potential job opportunities.

In her Purpose for the Event, the Director of DAAD, Lena Leumer said the whole idea of the event was to give students the opportunity to interact with different German organisations as well as help them to get in touch with German institutions.
She therefore, implored fresh students to be open to get some information, find out more about German and also speak to those students who have already studied German.
“As a fresher, if you are interested in studying German, you can talk to the continuing students for guidelines. I advise you all to be open, confident and bold to approach and speak to the facilitators on unclear issues.” The Director of DAAD advised.
In his Address, the Deputy Ambassador, German Embassy, Hans-Helge Sander challenged UEW as well as the nation to ensure steady rise in the number of Ghanaians who speak German.

“What is very striking for me is that in the neighbouring countries like Togo and Ivory Coast there are big numbers of people speaking German but in Ghana, statistics show that the number is small. It is not a difficult task to learn German so I challenge you to compete with your neighbouring countries.” The Deputy Ambassador said.
DAAD is the world’s largest funding organisation for the international exchange of students and researchers. It supports the internationalisation of German universities and promotes German studies abroad. The DAAD Information Centre Accra provides consultation to prospective students who are planning to study and conduct research in Germany.
