Acquiring UEW branded Tablet is optional for Distance Education Students - Acting V.C.

Distance Education students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) no longer have an obligation to acquire the UEW branded e-tablets made to facilitate their learning.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni announced this at the matriculation ceremony held on January 25, 2018 at the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK). He indicated that UEW Governing Council, at its recent meeting, considered grumblings of students about the quality and relatively high price of the tablets and decided against the demand on students to compulsorily acquire it.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni added that the price of the tablet had also been reduced for those who might take pride in still owning the UEW branded tablets. This announcement was met with a deafening applause and cheers by the elated students, who clearly demonstrated their contentment for the apparently awaited announcement.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor explained that the Governing Council’s decision was a demonstration of management’s devotion to prioritize the welfare of students of the University. He re-echoed the importance of the students to the University and conceded thus “we shall be doomed without you; we cannot afford to take you for granted, none of us will enjoy at your expense, and we are fully committed to offering you valuable and attractive services”. In that regard, he said ample efforts had been made to ensure that the distance students had delightful experiences so they could make good ambassadors of UEW upon completion.

“You can rest assured that we shall continue to strive to ensure that all that you need to make your studies a success is available to you in good quality and timely fashion” and that he said would include top-notch tutors who would be regular and punctual to all study centers and timely distribution of their study materials. In like manner, he asked the students to be fully committed to the respective programmes for which they had enrolled at UEW, saying they had a duty to manage their busy schedules as full time workers, parents and student since the results they might attain would be directly attributable to the efforts they put into their studies.

For the 2017/2018 academic year, the Institute for Distance and electronic-Learning (IDeL) of UEW has matriculated a total of 7,051 and 391 fresh undergraduate and post-graduate students respectively for its programmes hosted in a colossal 38 study centers dotted throughout the country. The matriculation at COLTEK also included some 473 TVET distance students.
