Alumni Congress and Executive Elections: OIA Meets Stakeholders

The Office for Institutional Advancement/Alumni Relations (OIA), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has briefed all candidates or their appointed representatives on preparations for the Alumni Congress and Executive elections scheduled for Saturday, 11th December, 2021, at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, UEW.  

The stakeholders meeting, which took place at the Registrar’s Conference Room and Mini-Conference hall, North Campus, UEW on  Wednesday, 8th  and Thursday, 9th December, 2021 respectively, discussed issues including the alumni database system and update of personal records, registration processes and compilation of voters’ register, security arrangements, nominations for executive positions and election modalities.

The initiative is part of the process to open up the electoral processes to stakeholders for greater transparency and credibility.  

The Director of OIA and Chairperson for the meeting, Dr. Mavis Amo-Mensah, indicated that her outfit, with the support of the Directorates of IT Services, Security Services and the Division of Publications and Communication had put in place genuine measures for a peaceful and successful congress and elections.

“We want to build a robust alumni, therefore, we do not intend to disenfranchise anybody who qualifies to vote. We have done a lot of work to ensure that we have a transparent and credible election come Saturday,” Dr. Mavis Amo-Mensah said.

The Director of IT Services, Dr. Ephrem Kwaa-Aidoo, explained that the current database was built from the congregation list over the years, provided by the Student Records Office. However, for the elections, a register was compiled from the database, where an individual ought to have been registered and paid-up his or her dues to be an eligible voter. He assured stakeholders that a security-conscious approach would be deployed for ID verification during the elections.    

The Director of Security Services, Mr. Bartholomew Alubokin divulging the security arrangements for the day, informed stakeholders that personnel from the Winneba Divisional Police would be there to assist the University internal security to ensure safety. He advised all delegates to desist from acts that could mar the event. 

The Head, Department of Publishing and Web Development and the Returning Officer, Mr. Jojoe Annan, updated aspirants and stakeholders present on nominations for executive positions and election modalities.

Aspirants expressed concerns about the deadline for the submission of proxy forms. It was agreed by consensus that all proxy forms be submitted by 5pm on Friday, 10th December, 2021, for the Proxy list to be made available to candidates at 7 am, Saturday, 11th December, 2021.  That notwithstanding, the provisional register would be made available to aspirants and same published on the university website.
