COLTEK Organises Orientation for Fresh TVET Distance Students
The College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) of the University of Education Winneba (UEW) on Wednesday, 22nd August, 2018 held an orientation for fresh undergraduate Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Distance students at Kumasi.
In his Opening Remarks, the Ag. Principal of COLTEK, Prof. Frederick K. Sarfo reminded students of the intensity of the TVET Distance programme. He therefore, encouraged them to devote adequate time and resources to their studies so they could succeed.
“Do not waste your time fidgeting with your mobile phones all the time. It would be sad if we did not learn to take control of this gadget to help us do our research and enhance our studies but rather allow the rife social media craze to consume us.” He said.
Prof. Sarfo noted that the University was uniquely endowed with competent teaching and administrative staff who were ready and willing to offer optimal support to the students for the entire duration of their programmes. Therefore, he said that it behooved the students to reach out and take advantage of the enabling conditions provided to ensure their success on the programme.
Nonetheless, he announced that consultations were underway to organise a special workshop on Learning Strategies for the TVET Distance students so they could properly organise themselves for effective learning on the programme.
The Acting Principal urged the students to pay particular attention to everything that would be exposed to them in the course of the orientation since the information was critical to their success on the programme and their convenience while on campus.
The Head of Human Resource at COLTEK, Mr. Richard K. Mprah speaking on behalf of the College Registrar, Mr. Michael Kofi Adu, traced the history of UEW and gave in-depth information on the organisational structure of the University. He assured the students of adequate provisions that the University had made to guarantee their comfortable stay in the University.
“Management has the responsibility to provide facilities and the services needed by students to have a conducive environment for their studies while it is the duty of students to preserve these facilities and put them to good use in order to benefit from them.” He said.
The Head of Finance at COLTEK, Mr. Geoffrey Mensah explained the procedures involved in the various transactions that the students would have with the University while on the programme.

He advised them to keep proper records of their financial transactions with the University and also encouraged that those who had the capacity could commit to paying the succeeding year’s fees in bits ahead since that would greatly ease the pressure that normally came with having to pay the whole amount at once at the beginning of the academic year.
The ceremony, was meant to greatly equip fresh students with information necessary for their easy integration into the University system treated topics such as “The role of Management in Providing Conducive Environment for Teaching and Learning; Procedure for Payment of Fees; Highlights on Academic Issues; Guidance and Counseling; and the Semester and Course Unit System”.
Others topics were “The Place of the Library in UEW Kumasi Campus; Facilities on Campus and their Proper Care; TVET Distance Programme on Campus; UEW Online Registration; Security on Campus”. It was climaxed with a tour of the campus organized by management for the fresh students.
