Faculties of Technical Education and Vocational Education hold workshop

The Faculties of Technical Education and Vocational Education have organised a workshop recently for their academic staff to sensitise them on the strategic vision of UEW and its implication for budgeting. The workshop also looked at the role of Heads of Department as leaders of academic departments as well as issues relating to the conduct of examination.

The facilitators for this workshop were: Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, Acting Dean, Faculty of Technical Education; Mr. Francis Donkor, Dean of Faculty of Vocational Education; Prof. Nicholas Kyei Baffour, Dean, Faculty of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering (KNUST) and Prof. Martin Amoah, Vice Dean of Student Affairs. Prof. Ahmed Addo who is on sabbatical leave and currently with the Department of Automotive/Electrical and Electronics moderated the workshop.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Reynolds Okai, Principal, College of Technology Education, who opened the workshop on behalf of the Vice Chancellor of UEW, emphasized the need for all activities of the departments to be tailored towards the strategic vision of UEW. He further indicated that COLTEK was the only University in the West Africa sub region which has the mandate and capacity to provide training in the area of TVET through the concept of Competency-Based Training (CBT). It was therefore important to regularly deliberate on developments within the faculties to move the institution forward. The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Technical Education, Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual presented a paper on the topic, “The Strategic Plan of the University of Education, Winneba: Its implication for the Faculties and Departments”.

He emphasised on the need for all staff, especially the Heads of Department (HODs), to be abreast with the Strategic Plan of UEW. He outlined the roles Departments need to play in the achievement of the strategic vision of UEW. He further indicated that it was important that annual budget was prepared from the operational plans of the Department derived from the Strategic Plan of UEW. “It is only through this that the strategic vision of UEW could be achieved come the year 2018.” Prof. Mitchual said. Mr. Francis Donkor, Dean, Faculty of Vocational Education, also delivered a paper on “Policies and Regulations on Examinations at UEW”.

Members were taken through salient portions of policies and regulations that govern the conduct of examination in UEW. Portions of the policy document covered in his presentation were: Moderation of exams - external and internal, preparation for end of semester examinations, invigilation, duties of examiners during examinations, marking of examination scripts, Recording students’ marks online and timelines, examiners meeting – departmental & faculty, timetable for processing of examination results, final year students’ results, confidentiality of UEW exams and sanctions.
