German Delegation Pays a Courtesy Call on the Vice-Chancellor of UEW
A 30-member German delegation, made up of officials, coordinators and lecturers of the German Academic Exchange Services Scholarship programme (DAAD) offices in Africa and Bonn has paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba on Monday 24th October, 2016.
In his welcome address, Professor Mawutor Avoke, expressed his excitement about the visit. He indicated that the German Studies Unit of the University is young and would require a lot of support and mentoring from the lecturers and coordinators from Germany. He expressed his optimism that the relationship and collaboration would help the Unit to grow.
The head of DAAD office in Accra, Dr Berit Stopa said DAAD sponsored lecturers in tertiary institutions across Africa held their annual meeting in Accra to deliberate on their work so far and map out strategies for the future. She added that the visit was primarily to create a network between the lecturers in the Department of German Studies of the University and those teaching the German language in other parts of the world. She noted that 400 lecturers have been trained and assigned to different institutions across the globe to help in the teaching of the German language.
She observed that, out of the 400 lecturers, 18 have been assigned to Africa. The University of Education, Winneba would therefore tap into the expertise of the lecturers assigned to the University and those assigned to the other African countries to design a comprehensive curriculum for the studying of the German language, she said.
She expressed the desire of the delegation to assist in providing scholarship opportunities for staff and students of the University for a range of postgraduate courses at German Universities.
The visiting group were delighted about the progress the German Unit had made so far in the University. They also interacted with the students and were conducted on a tour of the offices and lecture rooms of the German Unit.

University Librarian, Mr. Thomas D. Ziem, Senior Assistant Registrar, Centre for International Programme, Mr. Andy Agordah, Head, University Relations and Protocol Services, Mr. Israel E. Fugar, Head, English Education, Dr. Amma Abrafi Adjei, Head, Applied Linguistics, Dr. Charlotte Fofo Lomotey and 30 delegation from Germany.
