IDeL-UEW Equips Mentors for Supported Teaching in Schools

A three-week workshop for Supported Teaching in Schools (STS), has been opened in Kumasi for teacher-mentors of the Institute for Distance Education and e-Learning (IDeL).

The workshop is intended to train selected teacher-mentors from schools servicing the forty (40) study centres of the institute across the country.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop,  Director for IDeL, Prof. Francis Owusu Mensah, said the teacher-mentors were carefully selected from schools where students from the Distance Education programmes will be doing their internship training.

He explained that the teachers will act as mentors to nurture student-teachers and take them through professional skills development and competencies as part of their teacher training programme to make them professionally competent as 21st-century basic school teachers.

Prof. Owusu Mensah revealed that some 450 participants are expected to be trained during the workshop. These will further be grouped with different schedules over the three-week duration of the workshop.

The Director announced that the institute had been upgraded to a College,  and will, therefore, expand and roll out additional programmes to cater for all kinds of professionals in this country.

“Every year the institute organises workshops and has so far organised series of workshops to train tutors on the use of UEW Learning Management System (LMS); ICT tutors on how to support their colleagues in teaching on UEW Learning Management System;  and a workshop for centre coordinators on how to register students on the ITS integrator, a new system that the University has rolled on. These are all geared towards refreshing the knowledge and competencies of staff as well as keep them abreast with current trends in Distance Education,” Prof. Owusu Mensah averred.
