IERIS-UEW Holds Exhibition and Seminar to Observe African Universities Week
The Institute for Educational Research and Innovation Studies (IERIS) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has held an exhibition and a seminar to mark the 2019 African Universities’ Week, a period on the calendar of the Association of African Universities (AAU) earmarked for higher education institutions across Africa to commemorate the establishment of AAU.
The exhibition, held at the IERIS forecourt, displayed beautiful artistic works, attractive beadworks and practical Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs). The seminar also discussed mind boggling topics such as “contextualising teaching and learning of science, the war for quality talent: towards a peaceful and secure Africa through quality Higher Education and University Community Relations”.

The presentations were respectively facilitated by the Head, Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST), Prof. Kolawole Raheem; Senior Research Fellow, Centre for Educational Policy Studies (CEPS), Dr. Edison Pajibo; and Senior Research Fellow, National Centre for Research into Basic Education (NCRIBE), Dr. Emmanuel Tamanja.
The events, which saw exceptional cultural displays by the Department of Theatre Arts, was attended by the then Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean, Faculty of Science Education, Prof. (Mrs.) Ruby Hanson; University Chaplain, Rev. Dr. Alexander Edwards; Director, IERIS, Prof. Jophus Anamuah-Mensah; Deputy Registrar, IERIS, Mrs. Wilhelmina Tete-Mensah; lecturers, staff, basic school teachers and pupils.

The Association of African Universities (AAU) is the apex organisation and forum for consultation, exchange of information and co-operation among institutions of Higher Education in Africa. AAU represents the voice of Higher Education in Africa and supports networking by African institutions of Higher Education. The AAU is based in Accra and has a current membership of over 360 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
The African Universities’ Week which is celebrated annually on the 12th of November by Universities in Africa coincides with the birth of the AAU in Rabat, Morocco, on 12th November, 1962. The African Universities’ Week aims to present a unique platform to promote critical dialogue among stakeholders on how to improve Higher education in Africa. The African Universities’ Week celebrations have become a premier event on the calendar of AAU and this day has been celebrated by HEIs since 2000.
The theme for the 2019 African Universities Week was “Towards a Peaceful and Secure Africa through Quality Higher Education”.
