“Indeed, in the statutes of the University of Education, Winneba which I cited on your website, it says ‘appointment to the rank of professor shall be based on internationally acknowledged scholarship in the applicant’s field of teaching and research and contributions to the intellectual life of the University and the development of the country.

“Reading his works, his area of research appears to be in time management, leadership effectiveness, staff motivation, students and staff performance and he has about 40 academic publications in peer-reviewed journals in these areas. He is also a reviewer of many academic journals. So, I believe even as he speaks to us, he would get into some of these issues and tell us the kind of research that he did and the conclusions that he arrived at for us all to learn from. He has been involved in a lot of community work,” Prof. Gyapong avowed.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni, in his lecture, stated that the choice of his inaugural lecture topic was not just a happenstance adding, his entire life had been revolving around educational organisations at various levels.

“Whatever I have been able to achieve in my leadership positions in such institutions is due greatly to my ability to manage judiciously the time available to me. Thus, the essence of this lecture is to carry the audience along in appreciating time management as a veritable tool in achieving both organisational and personal success in life. The purpose of this inaugural lecture is to make a case for Time Management as Magic Wand for leadership effectiveness, and aware that every one of us is interested in, or affected by time,” he noted.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni tabled a proposal aimed at providing opportunities for training in time management for colleague Vice-Chancellors to Vice-Chancellors, Ghana, their management teams, academic boards as well as their student leadership. “With some of my past beneficiaries of time management training workshops, I will be delighted to share the experience with colleague educational leaders; convinced that time management can be a magic wand for leadership effectiveness”.

He proceeded, “with permission from the new Management of UEW, I would like to further promote the training of trainers exercise that I have been doing on a smaller scale. With the green-light of Management, I would like to put together a more formidable training of trainers programme in time management and through the instrumentality of this body, strengthen and expand the time management outcomes that are likely to be experienced at the university and its affiliates”.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni disclosed his readiness to expand his efforts at training in time management strategies with the Ghana Education Service.

Dr. Obaapanin Oforiwaa Adu

The Head, Department of University Relations Office and Media, UEW, Dr. Obaapanin Oforiwaa Adu, who introduced the Chairman for the occasion and moderated the event, pointed out that professorship indeed is an accomplishment and full professorship is even a greater accomplishment that needs to be celebrated symbolically.

“When we were young and growing up, we were told that professors were magicians who use their magic wands to conjure things but now we understand that professors use the supposed magic wand in creating knowledge paths, knowledge systems and understanding in the world,” she said.
