UEW Amalgamated Sports Club Embarks on a Five-Day Retreat

The Directorate of Amalgamated Sports Clubs of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has embarked on a five-day retreat at the Royal Lee’s Hotel, Tutu-Aburi in the Eastern Region of Ghana, from Thursday, 2nd to Sunday, 5th December, 2021.

The five-day retreat was under the theme: “Charting a New Era of Sports and Recreation in UEW”.

The event was organised to orient and equip newly appointed staff on various issues on their work, review Amalgamated Sports activities for 2020-2021 academic year and draft the framework for engaging Colleges of Education affiliated to UEW on sports and recreation.

The Ag. Vice-Chancellor, UEW and Special Guest of Honour for the event, Prof. Andy Ofori Birikorang, in his keynote address applauded the Directorate for undertaking this initiative. He assured the Directorate of the Management’s support in providing more logistics to enable coaches to discharge their duties efficaciously in preparing adequately for the main GUSA games in 2022.

Prof. Andy Ofori-Birikorang disclosed that the enactment of the new UEW Statute has brought some positive changes to the administration of the University including the upgrade of the Office of the Amalgamated Sports into a Sports Directorate.

He furthermore stated that work is ongoing to complete the Sports Facilities at Ajumako Campus to boost the performance of athletes on that campus towards projecting the name of the University.

Chairman of Amalgamated Sports Club, UEW, Dr. Kwame Kyere Diabour, welcoming participants expressed gratitude to the honorary coaches and other auxiliary officials. He commended them for their immense support and hard work rendered to the Sports Directorate and the University by extension.

There was an interaction and open forum session with the Acting Vice-Chancellor where participants and delegates shared their opinions and made meaningful suggestions.

The retreat was facilitated by renowned internal and external resources persons including the Director, Institute of Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD) Prof. Dandy George Dampson, Faculty Officer, School of Creative Arts, UEW, Dr. Pearl N.Y. Adubea Hammond, Senior Lecturer, Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sports, UEW, Dr. Emmanuel Osei Sarpong and Dr. Stephen Agyare, Medical Officer, UEW Clinic.
