UEW Commissions Several Projects for the Benefit of Students

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has commissioned several projects for the use and benefit of its students.  

The commissioning was done on Wednesday, 26th May, 2021, at the North and Central Campuses of the University by the Chief of Staff, Hon. Akosua Frema Opare, who represented the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Hon. Frema Opare was assisted by the Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and the Management of UEW.

This was disclosed in a speech delivered by the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni today, Friday, 28th May, 2021, at the 2nd Session of the 25th Congregation held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, Winneba. 

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the projects included eight sets of 500-capacity Lecture Theatres, a Food Court, an Ultramodern Students Centre, the Technology Block at the Central Campus and the Tower of Excellence at Simpa roundabout.

“I implore you to handle all these beautiful facilities with the care and healthy maintenance culture required to ensure that these projects serve their utmost purpose for as long as practicable,” Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni beseeched the beneficiaries. 

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni stated that Management had also paid close attention to several ongoing projects for the Institute for Distance and e-Learning (IDeL), to consolidate its leadership role in the country in bringing quality education to the doorsteps of qualified Ghanaians.

“A lot of steady progress has been made on the two-storey block at Koforidua-Kukurantumi, three-storey block in Cape Coast, three-storey block at Techiman-Tadieso, three-storey block at Ejisu-Onwe and the two-storey block in Accra. These are designed to provide lecture halls, internet café, library and ancillary facilities for our Distance Education Staff and Students,” he affirmed.  

He pointed out that following UEW’s strategic objective to expand graduate studies, promote quality research output, and enhance academic standards, the University is procuring a plagiarism checker – Turnitin – to further secure the quality of research works produced by its students and staff. 

Chairman of UEW Governing Council in an appeal to Government and the Ministry of Finance to address industrial action by SSA-UoG and GAUA

The Chairman of the Governing Council of UEW, Prof. Obeng Mireku, on his part, appealed to the Government and the Ministry of Finance to, as a matter of urgency address the industrial action by the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the looming industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA). 

“SSA-UoG members are currently on strike, and GAUA has indicated its intention to do same if the Minister of Finance goes ahead with the decision to stop the payment of certain allowances to some of its members. We are calling on the Minister of Finance to continue to engage Unions with outstanding issues. I am calling on Vice-Chancellors’ Ghana, to as matter of urgency to also intervene to avert any disruption to the academic calendar of public universities,” he pleaded.

A total of 10,000 students were presented for graduation at the 2nd session of the 25th Congregation ceremony. Of this figure, 1,288 students graduated with postgraduate degrees, 12 of whom were PhD graduands; 6,120 students graduated with first degrees and 2,592 with diplomas from IDeL.
