UEW Equips Academic Heads for 2019/2020 Academic year
Management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has organised an orientation programme for Academic Heads, Deputy Registrars and Sectional Heads to remind them of policies, rules, structures, responsibilities, rights and sanctions of the institution in order to be industrious in executing their duties.
The orientation took place at the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi on Monday, 7th October, 2019 for Kumasi and Asante-Mampong Campuses Academic Heads and Manna Heights Hotel on Friday, 11th October, 2019 for Winneba and Ajumako Campuses Academic Heads.
It discussed pertinent topics such as “the importance of orientation for University Heads; achieving our mandate through the implementation of Corporate Strategic Plan 2019-2023; the place of Deans, Directors, and Heads of Department (HoD) in University Management; ensuring excellence in our core mandate; functional financial administration practices in the public sector: the role of Deans, Directors, and HoDs; the role of the University library in the achievement of our core mandate; the role of procurement in achieving our core mandate; and supporting a student in distress: my role in a student-centered University”.

Speaking on the importance of orientation for University Heads, the Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq., stated that University Heads are managers and are involved in the daily administrative routines of the University hence, the necessity to regularly brief them through a well-tailored orientation programme to equip them for the particular academic year.
The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni presented on the topic “achieving our mandate through the implementation of Corporate Strategic Plan 2019-2023”. He threw more light on the vision, mission and mandate of UEW, core values and SWOT analysis. He urged the Academic Heads to exhibit academic excellence, good corporate governance, judicious utilisation and management of funds, gender equity and social inclusiveness, teamwork and partnership development, positive work attitude and be environmentally responsible to achieve the University’s five-year strategic plan.
The Ag. Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ruby Hanson took participants through “the place of Deans, Directors, and HoDs in University Management”. She charged the Academic Heads to be proactive in anticipating situations, setting goals and exercise self-initiative to be effective managers.
The Director, Quality Assurance, Prof. Yaw Ameyaw, in his presentation on the topic “ensuring excellence in our core mandate” entreated participants to adapt innovative teaching and teaching strategies and also organise local conferences to showcase what the University is doing for the public, National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), National Accreditation Board (NAB) and stakeholders of the University.
The Finance Officer, Mr. Francis Obeng enlightened participants on functional financial administration practices in the University whereas the University Librarian, Mr. Viscount Buer gave insight on the role of the University library in the achievement of UEW’s core mandate.

The Ag. Head of Procurement, Mr. Dominic Nibeneanaa Kuutiero expantiated on the role of procurement in achieving the core mandate of UEW while the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Kwasi Amponsah climaxed the session with a presentation on “supporting a student in distress: my role in a student-centered University”.
Participants asked insightful questions and contributed constructively to every presentation.
