UEW-K students organise Basic Design Technology (BDT) quiz competition for basic schools in Kumasi

The Old Students Association of Mampong College of Technical Education, formerly Mampong Technical Teacher’s College (MATTCOSA), UEW-Kumasi Chapter has organised interschool quiz competition for students of Anglican Junior High School in Kumasi to promote technical education.

The quiz competition was organised on the theme: "Regaining positive attitude towards technical educatioon"  in line with objective 12 of the UEW Corporate Strategic Plan (2014 -2018) which seeks to “Improve Branding and Visibility of the University”. The principal aim of the competition  was to project UEW Kumasi Campus as a unique institution mandated to train teachers for Technical and Vocational Education (TVET).

The Basic Design Technology (BDT) quiz competition was between streams A and B of, Anglican Junior High school situated in the vicinity of the University campus help students to have a fair idea and change of perception about technical education.

A lecturer at UEW-K and patron of the Association, Mr. Raphael Zakpasu speaking on the theme: “Regaining positive attitude towards technical education” encouraged the students to adopt positive perception towards technical education.

He cited countries such as China, Japan among others as having developed through the priority and the positive attitude they gave to technical education. He said technical education was essential to the industrial growth of every economy; therefore Ghanaians must show commitment to Technical and Vocational Education to push the nation’s agenda for development. Anglican Junior High School Stream A emerged the winner in the quiz competition.

The Headmistress of the stream (A) school, Mrs. Salome Adu could not hide her joy for the excellent performance put up by her students. She thanked the organizes for organizing such an educative programme. She appealed to other benevolent organisation and associations to emulate UEW-Kumasi Chapter of the Association's example. She implored for such a programme to be organised quarterly to develop students interest in the subject.

The chairman of MATTCOSSA, Eugene Bediako stressed that as a country we needed to change our attitude towards technical education to help in the socio-economic development and growth of the nation.

The second edition of the competition has also been staged on the University campus among three basic schools in the vicinity of the University.

The Head of Department for the Department of Construction and Wood Education, Mr. Michael Tsorgali chaired the event.
