UEW Stays Committed to Persons with Special Needs
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has installed a GHC413,000.00 elevator in the Faculty Block of of its College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK). The European Standard facility has a 1200kg-capacity and can accommodate 16 persons at a time.
This adds to the growing number of buildings on UEW's campuses that are being fitted with elevators. In addition to making certain that all its new buildings have accessible walkways for persons with disability, old ones are also being re-engineered gradually in that regard. These are clear indications of the University's commitment towards ensuring enhanced accessibility to all its buildings for all persons, particularly, those with special needs.
Commissioning the elevator on April 27, 2018, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni, expressed happiness at the completion of the elevator describing the feat as a further reinforcement of Management's commitment towards making sure that the University maintained its status as a place of excellence.
He remarked that, “We all know the importance of this facility to users. We therefore need to do everything humanly possible to keep it functioning at all times. We all have a responsibility as management, staff and students to ensure that this happens for our perpetual common good”, he advised and appealed thus, “if you are healthy and capable, please use the stairway and reserve the elevator for the aged, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities so that too much pressure is not brought on the facility to run it down”.
Meanwhile, he mentioned that the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a vital component that must be in good condition at all times to prevent the situation where users are stuck in the elevator because of power failure.
Present at the commissioning and test riding the elevator with the Acting Vice-Chancellor were some members of the UEW Governing Council, Principal Officers and Management of UEW as well as staff of COLTEK.
